Patterns on t-shirts and other substrates such as tote bags, mugs, and other objects and clothing items are much more detailed than the stock photos you found on these items in retail stores, departments, and on websites 10 to 20 years ago. That is because of a relatively new technology known as direct-to-film (DTF) transfer printing. Besides making patterns and photos much more realistic and detailed, custom DTF transfers enable people to put more personal photos and designs on their clothing and other personal items to make them more personable and stylized. What Are Custom Direct-To-Film Transfers?
Custom direct-to-film (DTF) transfers involves a person uploading their own custom designs, images, and prints to a website that enables them to edit, modify, and upload those designs (in what is called a “gang sheet”) so that they can be printed out via a DTF printer.
How Do These Transfers Work?
The DTF printer uses a specific type of powder and ink to print your chosen designs onto a specific type of transfer film. The powder is then transferred from the film onto whatever fabric or other substrate you choose via heat and pressure. The result is a long-lasting, vibrant print that resists fading, while also preventing loss of detail from the original image.
These types of transfers are superior to traditional transfer methods because, in those traditional methods, the ink itself is transferred from film to whatever material you choose. However, there is usually a noticeable loss of detail, plus the ink is more likely to fade sooner. Due to the fact that DTF transfers utilize ink that is coated with a special powder, this is what enables the image to retain its resolution and detail, as well as enable it to last considerably longer on whatever material you choose without fading.
