What is a DTF Transfer Printer?
A “direct to film” (DTF) printer is a type of inkjet printer that prints your chosen design onto a specialized type of film. The printer uses five DTF ink colors to print out your design – the normal colors you would expect in an inkjet printer (yellow, magenta, cyan, and black), as well as white. The film that this printer uses has an adhesive powder to it, which is key to the transfer process. When heat is applied to the film and pressed upon the fabric or material, your design will be transferred onto that fabric or material without any loss of resolution or coloring.
How Does This Type of Printer Work?
A direct-to-film printer will use those aforementioned inks to transfer your full-color design onto various types of materials and fabrics. Some of the most common items your designs can appear on include tote bags, hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and similar items.
Essentially, the printer will receive your design input (usually through what is called a “gang sheet” or set of instructions or diagrams to make your chosen design), then print that design out onto a specialized film. A special adhesive powder is added to this film; this powder enables the transfer process once heat is applied to the design and pressed onto a fabric or other appropriate substrate.
When the heat and pressure is applied, your design will appear on your chosen material as if you had actually drawn or imprinted the design onto the fabric itself, without any loss of detail or color.
